The Best WWII Epic Since Apple TV’s ‘Greyhound’ Officially Returns (Exclusive)
The acclaimed WWII TV series Das Boot, which continues the story of the 1981 cinematic masterpiece of the same name, premiered its first season on Hulu in 2018; while three subsequent seasons have made their international debut, American viewers have been left hanging. The second season of Das Boot is finally coming to American shores, courtesy of streamer MHz Choice, and Collider is proud to exclusively present its first trailer. The new season will debut on August 4 with a two-episode premiere.
In the trailer, World War II rages on the seas and on the land. It’s 1942, and Nazi Germany has an iron grip on the Atlantic Ocean with its rapacious wolf packs of U-boat submarines. However, their fate may have already been sealed, as the Allies begin to decode the secret transmissions of the Enigma machine. The horrors of war are all too apparent to the men who serve below the waves, but the singular nightmare of the Nazi regime is becoming impossible to ignore for the women they left behind on shore. If you need to catch up, season 1 of Das Boot premieres on MHz Choice on July 7; MHz Choice will also debut the third and fourth seasons of Das Boot, but their premiere dates have yet to be announced.
What Is ‘Das Boot’?
Das Boot (German for “the boat”) is adapted from the semi-autobiographical work of Lothar-Günther Buchheim, a wartime journalist under the Nazi regime who served on a U-boat in WWII. 1981’s Das Boot, an adaptation of Buchheim’s novel of the same name, was the most expensive German film ever made, but it became a global commercial and critical success, launching the international careers of its director, Wolfgang Petersen, and its star, Jürgen Prochnow. The TV series is based on Buchheim’s follow-up book, Die Festung (“the fortress”); it detailed his experiences in the latter half of the war, as the German war machine began to grind to a halt. MHz Choice is a streaming service that specializes in bringing the best overseas TV to America; their previous offerings include Babylon Berlin, The Killing, and The Bridge. This summer, they’re also the American streaming home of Zorro, a new French series that stars The Artist’s Jean Dujardin as the legendary masked hero of old Mexico.
Season 2 of Das Boot will premiere exclusively on MHz Choice on August 4 with two all-new episodes; new episodes will then premiere weekly. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
