10 Best Wordle Clones To Keep You Busy

The deceptively simplistic yet challenging daily word game, Wordle, has been a staple of many of our routines for years. The game is ideal for giving a quick little boost to critical thinking while providing a bit of dopamine through long streaks of success. Created in 2021 for the New York Times, each day there is a new five-letter word for players to attempt to discover through a series of guesses and hints. Of course, after five years of Wordle, sometimes it’s good to mix things up a little. Unsurprisingly, there are a plethora of free games that follow the basic foundations of Wordle available online that can offer a lot of variety. These can also be fun additions to your routine if one daily Wordle just isn’t enough for you. Whether you’re a Pokémon fan or someone who just wants a more challenging form of Wordle, this list gives you just a taste of the options available out there.
Moxle: Magic: The Gathering Meets Wordle

Like Wordle, the popular TCG, Magic: The Gathering, has become a regular staple in the lives of many. Of course, MtG takes a little more time and money to get into than the free word game. However, one deckbuilder site has offered the unique spin of making a Wordle copycat called Moxle using MtG card names as the answers. Though most of these Wordle clones can simply be clicked into, Moxle does require users to have an account with Moxfield. Thankfully, this is free and quick to create, and other features of the site could also prove useful for MtG fans.
Fibble: Wordle With Lies
Fibble game screenshot
A slightly evil variant of Josh Wardle’s Wordle is the deceptive Fibble. This free game seemingly operates identically to Wordle, with green boxes showing you have the correct letter in the correct spot, yellow stating that the letter is right but in the wrong spot, and grey to show that the letter isn’t in the word. However, Fibble adds in the uncertainty of lies. Each row has one lie, and you must deduce what the word is while tracking which letters you think are lying to you. If it is a little too hard, you can go into the settings to have it show lie counts, or you can choose a Hard Mode if it seems too easy for you.
Poople: Make The Word Poop

Perhaps you’re looking for a more lighthearted game where you can say poop a lot? The game Poople was originally created by a dad who wanted to keep kids occupied on family road trips, and now it’s a free browser puzzle for everyone to enjoy. The object of the game is simple. You are given one four-letter word to begin with, and you must change it to the word “POOP” in as few steps as possible by changing one letter at a time to create a valid word. Letters can be changed to any letter, but each word formed must be a real word and not simply made up to fit the necessary letter changes. For example, you might change the word “BARN” to “BORN” as one move, but you cannot change “BARN” to “BAON.”
Survivle: Don’t Find The Word

Taking the opposite goal of Wordle, in Survivle your goal is to lose. The game itself works the same as Wordle as far as the colors of letter squares operate. However, once you find that a letter is correct or that a letter is not in the word, you must use that information in your next word. Using this information can make losing surprisingly difficult while you attempt to make as many guesses that avoid the correct answer as possible. This format requires you to think very differently from when playing Wordle, although many of the best tactics in Wordle can be flipped to work well with Survivle. For instance, while in Wordle you may want to use many vowels in your first word, Survivle could benefit from using the fewest possible.
Waffle: Rearrange Letters

Using a waffle-like pattern to its grid, word puzzle Waffle already gives you the letters you need to use, just not in the right spots. Here you want to rearrange the letters by dragging them to other spots on the board, with the yellow signifying that the letter is in the correct word, but not the exact spot. Every Waffle is designed to be able to be solved in a minimum of 10 swaps, and you lose if it takes more than 15 to get every letter placed correctly.
Taylordle: For All The Taylor Swift Fans

All the Swifties out there may enjoy testing their song lyric and trivia skills in the Wordle clone, Taylordle. For anyone who has played Wordle, this is as straightforward as it comes, copying the same format almost exactly. You have six chances to correctly guess the word, which could be anywhere from four to eight letters long. Of course, as one might imagine, each correct word will be related to Taylor Swift in some way, often as a popular song lyric.
SWordle: The Star Wars Wordle

One of the most well-known and popular franchises to ever exist, Star Wars naturally has a couple of Wordle clones for it as well. Among these, the most popular seems to be SWordle. The puzzle game follows the same rules as regular Wordle, with six chances to discover the five-letter word. Although this time there are numbers and dashes included to allow for some of our favorite droids. While you might think being focused entirely on five-letter Star Wars words would limit its options, the game has over 14,000 words in its catalog. If you need help, there’s a handy hint button that appears in the top left after your third guess.
Worldle: Guess The Country

Whether you’re a geography wiz or simply want to get to learn more about the world we live in, Worldle takes the Wordle pattern but makes it more educational. The main game includes a picture of a country that you must guess the name of in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game will tell you how far away you are (in km) from the correct country, as well as which direction you need to look in. After solving which country it is, you can continue on to other brain-teasers, including guessing neighboring countries, the capital, the flag, and even trivia.
Pokédle: Classic Pokémon Wordle

Pokémon fans come in all kinds, with some preferring the tabletop card game, others enjoying the anime, and still more who might only play the video games. The franchise covers many forms of entertainment, but the pocket monsters remain through all. For this Wordle-like puzzle, Pokédle asks you to guess which Pokémon is correct. As you guess the name of a Pokémon, it will give you hints about whether things like the habitat, generation, evolution stage, and more are correct. Using these hints, you can narrow down your guesses and attempt to solve the puzzle. And, if it’s a bit too hard, after a few guesses, the game will offer you hints if you would like them.
Nookle: Animal Crossing Themed Word Games

Popular as a diversion for many Animal Crossing streamers, the Wordle-like Nookle offers a couple of options for free Animal Crossing-related puzzles that test your knowledge of the game. The most common is the Villager puzzle, where Tom Nook comes on the screen and asks you to guess the name of the villager he’s thinking of. As you guess a villager’s name, it will give you a green (correct), yellow (partial), and red (incorrect) color for its Gender, Species, Personality, Hobby, Favorite Colors, Favorite Styles, and Star Sign, which help you to then narrow down your guesses. Of course, this Wordle clone requires you to know not only the names of Animal Crossing villagers, but quite a lot about them!
