The story starts when Coco accidentally learns the secret of magic, which is the power system in this anime. In it, witches use blends of ink to draw symbols on paper with special properties, and when the circle is closed, it activates the spell based on what was drawn. Magic in Witch Hat Atelier is one of the most practical power systems in anime, with specific symbols and ways they are drawn affecting the speed, output, duration, and more of the spell. It is an incredibly in-depth system that fans can also learn, making it more about knowledge and ingenuity than pure power. Many fans claim Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the best anime ever, and it is hard to argue, considering it does everything well, including its power system. Alchemy is a form of science and metaphysical magic that is an ancient practice of equivalent exchange. Users wield it to transmute aspects of the world or themselves with this law, whether to help or harm people. Alchemy is like magic in Witch Hat Atelier in terms of practicality, but fans don’t know the system to do it. While it lacks in that department, it makes up for that with its philosophical implications that relate to the narrative’s main themes. Ascendance of a Bookworm shapes the world and its economy, political hierarchy and science through mana, making it more than just a power system, but an economic resource that defines the worldbuilding and the entire message of the story.
