12 Best DC Heroes Who Joined the Justice League in the 1980s, Ranked
![]()
The 1980s were a time of transition for DC Comics, and the Justice League found themselves caught up in it all. The decade saw two major eras for the League, each with its own distinctive roster. Any decade sees an influx of new blood into the League, but the 1980s saw some truly inspired and out of left-field choices.
As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 1980, the League was still riding high in the “Satellite Era.” Named for the League’s orbital headquarters, this period in League history saw the likes of Firestorm, Elongated Man and Zatanna fill out the ranks. Yet this era came crashing down, literally. From the ashes rose the “Detroit” Justice League, whose name derived from the city this incarnation operated out of. Led by Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter, the Detroit League was filled out by B and C-listers. Yet for some, it proved to be a major stepping point in their careers. Then came Crisis on Infinite Earths mid-decade, which streamlined DC’s multiverse into one. As a result, the League now had a much larger pool of heroes to draw from, and the next era in the team’s history took full advantage of this fact. Dubbed the “International” era, it bucked the grim and gritty trend that was sweeping comics.
The Detroit era, derided and ridiculed in its time, launched characters such as Vixen into the stratosphere.
Both of these eras of Justice League history are remembered fondly by fans. The Detroit era, derided and ridiculed in its time, launched characters such as Vixen into the stratosphere. The International Era was replete with heart and humor, something sorely missing from comics. What follows are the 12 greatest Justice League characters to join during the era of MTV and Ronald Reagan.

Animal Man spent a good portion of the 1980s in obscurity. In fact, he found himself on a team of characters aptly named “the Forgotten Heroes,” alongside other Silver Age creations: the Atomic Knight and Rip Hunter. With the ability to “borrow” the powers of animals in his area, Animal Man had access to an impressive array of abilities, including flight. Then, in 1988, Grant Morrison, a newcomer to the American comics’ scene, revamped Animal Man, transforming the character first into a vehicle to explore animal rights issues before morphing into a fourth-wall-breaking thrill ride.

The book put Animal Man back on the map, and straight into the Justice League. Joining during the beloved “International” era, Animal Man served with the European branch of the team, headquartered in Paris. As seen in the pages of Animal Man, he was never comfortable in the League, feeling himself out of place. Animal Man would be gone from the team within a year, and his solo book went into a dark and more supernatural direction. Nevertheless, Animal Man’s time in the Justice League ensured he would never return to Limbo.

Jack Kirby
Justice League #1
Mister Miracle had been a part of the DC Universe since the early 1970s, but would not find his way to the Justice League until the 1980s, during the International era. Joining the team alongside his wife Barda, Mister Miracle learned how to adjust to life on Earth thanks to his Justice League comrades. He would become a fixture of this time in the team’s history, and it helped keep the character alive and in the hearts and minds of fans forever.
Mister Miracle is best remembered today for a 12-issue maxiseries by Tom King and Mitch Gerard, and it is serving as the basis for an animated series.
Mister Miracle’s debut in the Justice League also kicked open the doors for other Fourth World denizens to join. After Mister Miracle and Barda, Orion and Lightray would join the team during the Morrison/Porter era during the mid-1990s. While it is said Fourth World creator Jack Kirby did not want the characters to interact with the larger DC Universe, they in fact add a great deal to it, and Mister Miracle’s time in the Justice League was proof.

Booster Gold is today remembered as a pillar of the Justice League’s “International” era, joining the squad during one of its earliest adventures. One of the first major new characters introduced to the DC Universe after the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Booster Gold represented a new type of hero. Hailing from the distant 25th century, Booster traveled back to the 20th to seek fame and glory, which somehow led him to the Justice League. Booster remained with the Justice League for a decade, weathering several lineup changes along the way. Booster’s time on the team elevated his profile greatly within the DC Universe, and set him up for great things down the road. Most importantly, Booster Gold met his best friend while serving on the Justice League: Blue Beetle. The “bromance” vibe the two brought to the Justice League was a hallmark of that period, and today they are remembered as one of the greatest buddy pairs in comics.

Beatriz Da Costa has had several heroic aliases in her life, including the Green Flame, but her time in the Justice League ensured she will be forever known as “Fire.” She was a former member of the Global Guardians, a team of heroes from around the globe who presaged the Justice League’s International era. In fact, the United Nations pulled funding from the Global Guardians and diverted it to the League, which initially created hostility between Fire and the team. However, she eventually put her differences with the League aside, and became a valued member. The International era of Justice League history lived up to its name: the team had “embassies” around the world and a United Nations charter. Characters such as Fire, who is Brazilian, further drove home just how far-reaching in scope the International era of the League truly was. Alongside her best friend Ice (more on her in a moment), Fire served the Justice League well. Like many heroes on this list, Fire’s time in the Justice League paved the way for bigger and better things.

The heroine fans know and love as Ice has a complicated history in the DC Universe, and two incarnations have served on the Justice League. The best known, Tora Olafsdotter, was actually the second version, after Ice Maiden, who, like Fire, was introduced in the Super Friends tie-in comic. However, it would be Tora who joined the League, and when she seemingly died, Ice Maiden came out of retirement to take her place. Today, Ice Maiden goes by the name Glacier, and Tora continues on as Ice.
The Justice League’s International era helped position a number of characters as major players in the DC Universe, and Ice benefited greatly.
During her time in the Justice League, Ice was the team’s heart and soul. Her friendship with Fire is one of the best in DC history, and they remain close to this day. The Justice League’s International era helped position a number of characters as major players in the DC Universe, and Ice benefited greatly. She and her best friend Fire recently appeared in a miniseries relocating them to Smallville, showing the duo is still relevant.

Gerry Conway and Bob Oksner
Justice League of America Annual #2
Vixen, one of the first Black heroines in the DC Universe, joined the Justice League during the Detroit period. As noted earlier, this era in League history was not treated with respect when it was being published, which may have hurt Vixen outside the gate. Her creator, the late Gerry Conway, was also the Justice League writer during the Detroit period, and he added her to the roster. Yet the Detroit era has been mostly rehabilitated, and it is now viewed as the starting point for Vixen’s career.
Today, Vixen is one of DC’s premiere Black superheroes. After the Detroit era ended, Vixen moved onto the Suicide Squad, but would eventually rejoin the Justice League in the 2000s. She had a rocky start to her career, both in-universe and out, but Vixen’s time with the Justice League was crucial in making her a great hero that still appears 45 years after her debut.

Guy Gardner

Guy Gardner

Legends #6
When DC began assembling the lineup for the International era of the Justice League, certain heroes were off limits, such as Superman and Wonder Woman. Furthermore, the creators were not allowed to use Green Lantern Hal Jordan, who had left the Green Lantern Corps temporarily. Yet Giffen, DeMatteis and Maguire still wanted a Lantern on the team, so they went with Guy Gardner. At the time, Gardner was still new to the Corps: while he had been selected as Jordan’s alternate, he spent many years in a coma. Guy Gardner brought a definite harder edge to the Justice League’s International era. Cocky and arrogant to the point of being insufferable, Guy Gardner earned the ire, but also begrudging respect, of his teammates. However, there was one exception: Batman. In a now infamous scene, The Dark Knight punches Gardner in the face, knocking the Lantern out completely. Despite this rocky start, Gardner is today regarded as a pillar of this era in League history.

Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman
Legends #6
The Crisis on Infinite Earths consolidated DC’s multiverse, merging the histories of five Earths into one, and the International era of the Justice League used this to add Doctor Fate, formerly of Earth-2, to its ranks. One of the most powerful magic users in the DC Universe, Doctor Fate had been a staple of the League’s predecessor, the Justice Society of America. While the League had sorcerers on its roster before, such as Zatanna, Doctor Fate added some much-needed magical muscles.
Midway through Doctor Fate’s Justice League stint, he was killed off in the pages of his own solo title, and was replaced by a woman named Linda Strauss. She would join the team in Justice League America #30, and would stay with them until her untimely passing. While Doctor Fate came and went with the Justice League, their presence on the team helped drive home DC’s unified, post-Crisis timeline.

Power Girl has had a convoluted history in DC history. When she was introduced, Power Girl was essentially the Earth-2 Supergirl, but once DC merged its Earths during the Crisis, her history was rewritten, turning her into an Atlantean castoff. From that moment on, Power Girl has struggled to find her footing in the DC Universe, and has only recently made inroads in this direction. Later, she was revealed to be one of the last survivors of Earth-2, and this has remained true since.

Power Girl’s time in the Justice League came during her “wilderness era.” Joining the European branch of the team, Power Girl added some much-needed muscle to the League. While Power Girl was already well known by DC fans when she joined the Justice League, her stint on the team kept her relevant, and set her up for the great things that were to follow.

Legends #6
Blue Beetle, like many DC characters, began life at a different publisher, in this case Charlton Comics, before landing on Earth-4 during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Recruited to the Justice League during the Legends crossover event, the Blue Beetle’s presence on the team, like Doctor Fate, underscored DC’s post-Crisis publishing plans. The Blue Beetle struggled with feelings of inadequacy, but soon proved to be a major asset to the Justice League, thanks to his knack for technology.
Others who have held the Blue Beetle title include Dan Garrett and Jaime Reyes.
Blue Beetle would meet his best friend, Booster Gold, while serving in the Justice League. Given the happy-go-lucky nature of both heroes, their pairing seemed natural, and indeed the two played off each other well. When Beetle temporarily died during the buildup to Infinite Crisis, Booster Gold took it upon himself to bring the killers to justice. When this version of the Blue Beetle returned, the duo picked up where they left off.
