Baldur’s Gate 3 Gets Official New Release For July 2026
Baldur’s Gate 3 may very well be the most popular game of our lifetimes, and aside from its ever-returning player base who’ve been at it from the get-go, the game is still attracting newcomers to this day. Aside from the expansive base game and Larian’s various content rollouts in the past, BG3 also has one of the most active mod scenes in gaming, keeping the experience fresh for even those who’ve been at it for years. Mods such as the in-progress Cosmic Vessel project, which aims to add an entirely new, fully voiced origin character and class with dedicated subclasses and unique spells, are the perfect example of why Baldur’s Gate 3 players continue to enjoy the experience. The latest addition is Baldur’s Gate 3: The Necromancy of Thay, a premium hardcover notebook that faithfully recreates one of the game’s most memorable magical artifacts. Published by Clarkson Potter under Penguin Random House, the 272-page notebook launches on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, costing roughly $25 USD. Preorders are available now through Amazon, Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble, Penguin Random House, and most major booksellers.

Unlike the cursed tome found in-game, this real-world version contains blank gridded pages designed for campaign notes, sketches, or journaling, while replicating the book’s sinister appearance with an embossed skull, shimmering amethyst-style cover, foil detailing, and decorative clasps. Within Baldur’s Gate 3 itself, “The Necromancy of Thay” is a legendary magical grimoire discovered beneath the Blighted Village. Bound in humanoid skin and infused with dark necromantic magic, it forms part of a lengthy side quest in which players can either destroy the book or unlock its forbidden knowledge using the Dark Amethyst. Those willing to embrace its power eventually gain potent abilities such as Speak with Dead and Danse Macabre, allowing them to summon undead allies.
The tome’s significance extends well beyond Baldur’s Gate 3 as well. In the wider Forgotten Realms setting, The Necromancy of Thay is one of the infamous spellbooks created by the Red Wizards of Thay, a nation renowned for its mastery of necromancy and forbidden magic. Its appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of many references to the deep lore surrounding Thay and its lich ruler, Szass Tam, making the artifact a fan-favorite piece of D&D history as well as one of the RPG’s most iconic collectibles.
