HBO’s $34 Billion Franchise Show Is Only 6 Months Away

In a mere six months, HBO will bring back one of the biggest fantasy franchises in the genre’s screen history. Ever since Game of Thrones season 1 became a global sensation back in 2011, HBO has been the home of small-screen fantasy. Of course, this title has been hard won, as every streaming service vied to outdo the cable giant with their own offerings in the genre. Although Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings prequel The Rings of Power is one of the most expensive TV shows in history, it was actually the streaming service’s Critical Role show The Legend of Vox Machina that did the best job of recapturing the mature, gritty appeal of Game of Thrones. Netflix’s The Witcher was also a solid Game of Thrones substitute, as was its hit League of Legends show Arcane. However, as good as these shows were, the Game of Thrones franchise remains the high-water mark by which small-screen fantasy is measured. It doesn’t hurt that, after a messy final season with a divisive finale, the original show was redeemed by the critical and commercial acclaim of its spinoffs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, HBO’s next fantasy series, Harry Potter, is set to completely overshadow all three of these.

Set to debut with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in December 2026, HBOMax’s Harry Potter show will bring controversial author J. K. Rowling’s seven-book series to life as seven eight-episode seasons. Although the show’s official budget has not yet been disclosed, rumors abound that the project is HBO’s most expensive series ever. The existing Harry Potter movies made a staggering $9.5 billion at the box office, including the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them spinoffs. Since the movie series ended, the reputation of the books has been seriously marred by Rowling’s public history of transphobia. However, HBOMax is betting big on the show regardless, and Harry Potter is set to be bigger than the entire Game of Thrones franchise for one major reason. Unlike almost every major fantasy streaming series and almost all of HBO’s biggest historical hits, the series is primarily aimed at an audience of children.

While HBOMax’s Harry Potter show also aims for a peripheral demographic of nostalgic millennials, the source novels are for children, and the show already reflects this in the tone of marketing materials. However, HBO has historically been a cable network with a distinctly adult reputation, from its earliest hits, like Tales from the Crypt, to its most acclaimed titles ever, like Band of Brothers and The Sopranos.

The brutal war drama The Pacific, the frank and groundbreaking dramedy Sex in the City, and the gritty crime epic The Wire are all among HBO’s most iconic titles, and none of them are remotely suitable for family viewing. More than almost any other major player in the entertainment industry, HBO has historically prided itself on a mature, adults-only brand. However, this will need to change entirely for the Harry Potter show to become a success. What makes this transition even trickier is the fact that most small-screen fantasy hits are also firmly R-rated, and this is thanks in part to HBO itself. The success of Game of Thrones spawned legions of imitators, almost all of which borrowed the franchise’s bloody, graphic approach to the genre.

From Outlander to The Mighty Nein to Castlevania to Interview with the Vampire, live-action fantasy TV has spent the last decade and a half following in the footsteps of Game of Thrones by moving away from the post-Harry Potter family fantasy boom. Now, HBO’s Harry Potter show needs to bring back family-friendly fantasy in a big way to justify the show’s massive price tag.
