Netflix’s R-Rated Dark Fantasy Streaming Sensation Deserves A Second Season
Over the past two weeks, a new R-rated dark fantasy series has been gripping Netflix viewers around the world. Intertwining medieval folklore with scintillating action sequences and cutting-edge visual effects, this series has featured in the streaming giant’s global top 10 ever since its release, appealing to fans of multiple genres in country after country. Perhaps the only drawback to this show is that it’s over too quickly. Produced as a standalone miniseries lasting just eight episodes and approximately 400 minutes in total, The East Palace leaves almost everyone who watches it wanting more. Like no other K-drama on television, the series combines martial arts and supernatural mythology better than any other currently streaming. Very few dark fantasy shows can claim to be excellent from start to finish, but The East Palace is certainly one of them. Created by Korean genre specialists Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, it depicts a fictionalized version of the medieval Joseon dynasty, in which malignant spirits threaten the residence of the Crown Prince. After reaching Netflix on July 17, the show has proven to be an unqualified triumph, taking its rightful place among the streamer’s best fantasy binge-watches. However, there’s also a growing clamor for The East Palace to continue. Although its self-contained story is designed to be told across a handful of episodes, the series surely warrants extending into a second season.

A spectacular Netflix debut for writers Kwon and Seo, The East Palace reached number 2 in the streamer’s chart for non-English language series just days after its release. Even more impressively, it has peaked at number 4 on Netflix’s global TV chart overall, alongside shows in English. Within the first 48 hours of its run on the platform, the series wracked up 4.9 million views, meaning that only Little House on the Prairie, Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You, and Elite Force were watched more during the same period. Meanwhile, it performed much better than higher-profile shows with far bigger budgets, like Will Ferrell’s The Hawk.
Even if The East Palace’s Netflix success hasn’t included a run in the United States top 10 for TV shows so far, its status as a worldwide hit is already secure. The series doing so well reflects a recent surge in the popularity of historical martial arts releases on the small screen, from Shōgun to Last Samurai Standing. Yet, this new Netflix show features key differences from the general resurgence of samurai series in the 2020s. Firstly, it’s Korean rather than Japanese, and bases itself on Korean folklore. Secondly, it integrates overtly fantasy elements into a story of dark forces and spiritual unrest afflicting a royal household.
The East Palace Deserves To Continue For Another Season
Almost two weeks on from its Netflix debut, The East Palace has maintained a deserved 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting the quality of both its storytelling and its dazzling production. The show is blessed with two exceptional lead performances, too, from remarkably charismatic young actors Nam Joo-hyuk and Roh Yoon-seo.
Effortlessly blending immersive combat sequences with spiritual elements from Korean mythology, such as ghostly “gwi-shin” and vengeful “wongwi”, this series bears the cinematic hallmarks of streaming best-ever fantasy releases. The fact that it’s a wholly original creation, without any literary source material, only adds to the show’s import as a genre production of rare brilliance. It’d be a crying shame if the last we see of The East Palace is the eight episodes already on Netflix. If any 2026 fantasy series deserves to be renewed for another season, it’s surely this one, regardless of the original intention of its creators. K-dramas come and go, but this masterpiece feels like it has real staying power.
