Stardew Valley Meets Studio Ghibli In Gorgeous New Anime Life Sim
While Studio Ghibli has worked on games in the past (Magic Pengel, anyone?) and there have been plenty that have tried to imitate it, there are very few that actually perfectly adopt the style, tone, and whimsy of the studio’s films. Sure, you can make something look in the style of a Miyazaki or Takahata film, but if it doesn’t have the heart, the themes, or the magic, then it’s merely a hollow reflection that looks rather pretty, but achieves little else. Fortunately, among all of the games inspired by Studio Ghibli, stands a new contender that looks pretty close to reigning supreme as one of the first games that not only looks like a Studio Ghibli film, but feels like one too. That’s a rare accomplishment that, frankly, only a handful have managed to achieve in the past (Rainy Season on Steam is one). However, should it pull it off, this Stardew Valley-inspired Studio Ghibli-esque game could end up becoming not just a great life sim, but one of the best indies in a while.
Vivarium Is Absolutely Gorgeous

Firstly, let’s get the obvious out of the way and say that Studio Meadowflower’s attempt at recreating the Studio Ghibli aesthetic in its upcoming Stardew Valley-inspired life sim, Vivarium, is undeniably incredible. It is a truly gorgeous game, one featuring entirely hand-drawn visuals, with every inch of its small world, every frame of its beautifully animated cutscenes, absolutely oozing in style, charm, and that warm, uplifting, dreamlike feel one can only get from a Ghibli film. Vivarium will absolutely stand out to anyone looking for this exact aesthetic in a video game as the gold standard. However, while certainly a defining feature of the developer’s debut title, it isn’t its only strong point. The game, set, as the title implies, within a vivarium, sees its protagonist Jenny exploring the nearby town, talking to locals, and unraveling the mystery at the heart of it. The in-game clock is synced with the player’s real-life calendar, which gives the game an Animal Crossing-esque flair, and when players aren’t engaged in the central mystery, they’ll be getting up to all kinds of Stardew Valley-esque shenanigans, like tending to their garden. In many ways, Vivarium also feels like the criminally underrated Boku no Natsuyasumi, a phenomenal Japan-exclusive title that saw a young boy enjoying his summer holiday through catching bugs, hanging out with friends, and generally passing the time having fun. The fact that Vivarium seems to be offering that kind of experience should be seen as a huge win for cozy fans, as it’s a formula that works unbelievably well. Frankly, Vivarium could end up being the next best game like Stardew Valley, and, in many ways, even surpass it.
When Does Vivarium Release?

The only caveat with Vivarium is that it doesn’t currently have a locked-in release date. Studio Meadowflower did announce during the game’s reveal at the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase that it is set to release in 2027, although a more specific date wasn’t given. The upside is that it is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one, so subscribers can look forward to playing it on there for free when it launches.
For those who’ve just learned about this wonderful game, 2027 won’t seem like too far away. For those, like myself who’ve been following it for a long while, it cannot come soon enough. Of course, as with every upcoming game, there is every possibility that Vivarium doesn’t quite live up to expectations. However, as subjective as this may be, I don’t see that happening. Studio Meadowflower has been very forthcoming with its progress updates, showcasing gameplay snippets and cutscene moments, and it all looks incredible. A lot of passion has clearly been poured into this project, and that kind of love and care doesn’t typically result in an underbaked project. Everything from the visuals, soundtrack, Stardew Valley-esque farming gameplay, Boku No Natsuyasumi and Animal Crossing life sim elements, and gorgeous cutscenes, look set to delight us all when Vivarium releases in 2027. Until then, there are plenty of other great Stardew Valley-likes, and even a Studio Ghibli-inspired game or two to play.
