Tony wielding a gun in NCIS: Tony & Ziva

12 Years Later, Tony DiNozzo Proved NCIS Wrong

While it might have taken 12 years after the NCIS character made one promise, Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo still managed to rewrite the show’s history with the arrival of one series supporting star. Although the spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva only lasted one season, the fact that the 2025 show happened at all is a testament to the enduring popularity of Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo. A flippant field agent who outgrew early-season misogyny to become a fan-favorite, Tony was a series regular until season 13. There are now over 23 seasons and 500 episodes of NCIS, with the police procedural franchise giving the classic sitcom The Simpsons a run for its money when it comes to record-setting longevity. Although Tony left the show only halfway through its run, his return in NCIS: Tony & Ziva allowed viewers to check in on his fate since season 13’s exit. Throughout the show, Tony was a womanizer who had relationships with Jeanne Benoit and E.J. Barrett, before season 11 finally saw his chemistry with Ziva turn physical. In the process, Tony inadvertently proved his younger self wrong. Toward the end of season 2, episode 21, “Hometown Hero,” he is asked about having children someday and sardonically replies, “Yeah… I don’t think I could handle that.” However, the arrival of his daughter with Ziva, Tali David-DiNozzo, in season 13’s finale “Family First,” proved otherwise. Of course, this comment could also have been viewed as a way for the show to subtly foreshadow Tony’s future, as his character had completely transformed in the intervening years.

Throughout the show’s early seasons, Tony was such an immature womanizer that many TV critics called his character annoying and smug in early reviews. While he displayed a lot of chemistry with Ziva throughout seasons 4—10, the fact that their relationship didn’t become explicitly romantic until season 11 proved just how much Weatherley’s character needed to mature first. It might be hard to imagine when watching NCIS: Tony & Ziva, but it was once unthinkable that Tony would respectfully take a female colleague’s advice.

This is what makes Tali such an interesting part of Tony’s character arc, as she was a pivotal part of turning the playboy into a devoted family man. As much as the title of “Family First” seemed sardonic, NCIS: Tony & Ziva proved that the episode’s name was prescient, as Tony became a genuinely good father who prioritized his daughter’s future over everything else in the spinoff. Learning that Ziva had seemingly died in “Family First” was already enough of a catalyst to drive Tony to leave the team and focus on raising his daughter alone, something his younger self would never have dreamed of doing. However, NCIS: Tony & Ziva only made his character’s offscreen transformation more obvious, as Tali began to display some of her dad’s rebellious attitude and forced him into the role of mature, patient caretaker.
Tali Is One Of The Best Parts Of DiNozzo’s NCIS Story

While a lot of viewers had fun watching Tony as a carefree lothario, turning the agent into a caring dad was a daring decision that brought the character new layers of nuance. After thirteen seasons, Tony was overdue for a new persona, and Tali’s presence was an effective way to completely reshape his priorities overnight. Usually, such drastic character shifts can feel scarcely believable, but unexpectedly becoming a single parent was a rare event that fully justified such a radical about-face.

The same storyline happened to How I Met Your Mother’s Barney Stinson, another legendary womanizer from ‘00s TV. However, that iconic sitcom made the mistake of only revealing Barney’s transformation into a devoted dad in its series finale, meaning viewers never got to really see this new side of the character, unlike NCIS’s Tony.
